Program Information

The Department of History at Western offers a variety of graduate programs. Our Ph.D. program trains select graduate students to be professional historians—world-class researchers, teachers, and scholars. Our M.A. program in History is a one-year, fully-funded program that emphasizes the deep study of history and the development of research, writing, and analytical skills. Our M.A. program in Public History is either a 12 or 16 month, fully-funded program that merges classroom theory, graduate level research, and hands-on practice to explore the public side of history in museums, archives, historical sites, and more. For the regulations associated with these programs, see History’s Graduate Handbook.

We also participate in several innovative collaborative and interdisciplinary programs: graduate degree programs in Environment and SustainabilityMigration and Ethnic Relations, and Transitional Justice, plus the new combined J.D. / M.A. degree program in Law and History.
